October 23, 2009 – Over the past 6 months, the federal government has allocated $787 billion to the nation, including the state of Texas, in hopes of stimulating the ailing economy. With around $530 million of those dollars planned to go to Texas construction projects and contractors, and about $45 million already dolled-out, Texas’ construction industry now can report some measurable benefits of the federal aid. To date, the 236 stimulus-funded jobs in progress have created or saved close to 1,100 jobs, officials recently reported.
Some notable stimulus projects underway include the $61 million in repairs to the Houston Ship Channel and the $102 million courthouse which is being constructed in Austin. And, of projects that have not yet commenced, is the $621 million Fort Hood military hospital, which is partially funded by federal dollars. One contractor who is taking advantage of the Fort Hood opportunities stated that the stimulus construction prevented layoffs for about 120 of their employees.
